Burano is one of the most memorable islands in the Venetian lagoon, but reaching it takes more planning than crossing the historic center by foot.

Best starting point

Fondamente Nove

For most visitors already in Venice, Fondamente Nove is the most useful departure area for Burano because it faces the northern lagoon.

From San Marco or Rialto

Allow extra walking or vaporetto time to reach the correct departure stop. The transfer can take longer than expected if the city is crowded.

Public water bus route

ACTV line 12

The usual public route to Burano is ACTV line 12 from Fondamente Nove toward the northern lagoon islands.

Validate before boarding

Tickets and passes must be validated before the ride and again when required after changing services.

How much time to allow

Travel time

Expect the boat journey from Fondamente Nove to take roughly 40 to 50 minutes, plus waiting time at the stop.

Visit time

For Burano alone, allow at least two to three hours including the return journey. For a relaxed island day, allow half a day or more.

Combining islands

Murano first

Murano is closer to Venice and often works well before Burano if you want glassmaking history and a shorter first leg.

Torcello after Burano

Torcello is quieter and more contemplative. Add it only if you have enough daylight and do not mind a slower rhythm.
